| Alberta Breastfeeding Support Services Directory | | |
The directory lists contacts for breastfeeding resources in Alberta communities (updated July 2006).
Table of Contents
Introduction
The Alberta Medical Association (AMA) and Alberta Perinatal Health Program provide this directory as a service to its stakeholders and the community.
For more information, please contact the Alberta Perinatal Health Program or Ann Hense, Coordinator, Education at 780.735.1000 or Ann.Hense@albertahealthservices.ca.
The Alberta Breastfeeding Support Services Directory was updated in July 2006. It aims to provide physicians and other health care professionals with a list of breastfeeding resources available in their communities. Resources in this directory may be referred by physicians or self-referred by patients unless otherwise stated. Please refer to References for additional details.
The Canadian Medical Association (CMA), College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), AMA and other national/provincial organizations have demonstrated their support for breastfeeding by endorsing the 1981 International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes (see appendix) and the Baby-Friendly Initiative.
Health care providers play a pivotal role in the establishment and maintenance of breastfeeding. They provide initial care and support for breastfeeding families. The Alberta Breastfeeding Support Services Directory is designed to assist health care providers by providing information about breastfeeding resources in their communities.
The directory includes listings of lactation consultants working in Alberta. Lactation consultants are certified through an international body, the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners. Certification requires clinical practice experience, the successful completion of an exam and ongoing education. Lactation consultants can be health care workers (dieticians, physiotherapists, nurses, physicians, etc.) or lay persons. They are employed by hospitals, community health organizations, breastfeeding clinics or are self-employed.
To request the addition or deletion of a certified lactation consultant from this directory, please contact Grace Guyon, Coordinator, Quality Improvement, Alberta Perinatal Health Program, North Office, 300 Kingsway Professional Centre, 10611 Kingsway Ave NW, Edmonton AB T5G 3C8; phone 780.735.1006; email graceguyon@albertahealthservices.
We trust that you will find this resource useful for you and your patients.
The AMA and the Alberta Perinatal Health Program acknowledge the assistance of Maureen Fjeld, IBCLC, RLC, Coordinator for the Alberta Breastfeeding Committee, in updating this directory and the list of resources.

American Academy of Pediatrics: Policy Statement "Breastfeeding and the use of human milk"
http://www.aap.org/
APPENDIX
Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding
Every facility providing maternity services and care for newborn infants should:
-
Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health-care staff.
-
Train all health-care staff in skills necessary to implement this policy.
-
Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding.
-
Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within a half hour of birth.
-
Sh ow mothers how to breastfeed, and how to maintain lactation even if they should be separated from their infants.
-
Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breast milk, unless medically indicated.
-
Practice rooming in - allow mothers and infants to remain together 24 hours a day.
-
Encourage breastfeeding on demand.
-
Give no artificial teats or pacifiers (also called dummies or soothers) to breastfeeding infants.
-
Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic.
A Joint WHO/UNICEF Statement. (1989). Protecting, promoting and supporting breastfeeding: The special role of maternity services. Switzerland: The World Health Organization.
Summary of the International Code of Marketing of Breast-Milk Substitutes
-
No advertising of all these products to the public.
-
No free samples to mothers.
-
No promotion of products in health care facilities.
-
No company mothercraft nurses to advise mothers.
-
No gifts or personal samples to health workers.
-
No words or pictures idealising artificial feeding, including pictures of infants, on the labels of the products.
-
Information to health workers should be scientific and factual.
-
All information on artificial infant feeding, including the labels, should explain the benefits of breastfeeding, and the costs and hazards associated with artificial feeding.
-
Unsuitable products, such as sweetened condensed milk, should not be promoted for babies.
-
All products should be of a high quality and take account of the climatic and storage conditions of the country where they are used.
