Alberta Medical Foundation
'Preserving the past to guide the future'
The Alberta Medical Foundation (AMF) is the only registered charitable foundation that promotes the research, study and appreciation of the history of medicine in Alberta.
The AMF was established by the Alberta Medical Association in 1987 through a bequest from Dr. Margaret Hutton. She was the first female physician specializing in obstetrics and gynecology to practise in Edmonton. Foundation objectives include encouragement of teaching and research, particularly of the history of medical practice and practitioners in Alberta.
A major AMF objective has been the establishment of a fully funded Chairs of medical history at each of the Alberta medical schools. Since 1987, the AMF has disbursed (or had matched) more than $1 million for:
- Funding a Chair in the history of medicine at the University of Calgary (U of C)
- Annual library grants to the medical libraries at the University of Alberta and U of C
- Support of the History of Medicine Days at the U of C and the history of medicine programs at the two Faculties of Medicine in Alberta
- Assistance in the publication and dissemination of books on various aspects of Alberta's medical history, most recently supporting the publication of Profiles and Perspectives from Alberta Medical History, by Dr. Robert Lampard
The AMF also finances the Annual Margaret Hutton Lecture Series at the Alberta Medical Association's annual general meetings.
With the U of C Press and Health sciences Library, the AMF has created the Alberta ONline Medical History collection, which provides students, teachers, researchers, historians, physicians and others free access to a weath of information about the history of medicine in Alberta.
