Tarrant Scholarship

Want to be a rural physician? There's a scholarship for that!

  • Each year the AMA Section of Rural Medicine awards the Dr. Michael Tarrant Scholarship to a third-year medical student from the University of Alberta (U of A) and the University of Calgary (U of C) who demonstrate an interest in rural medicine.

  • A medical student is eligible to apply if he or she is:
    • Entering third-year medical school at the U of A or the U of C in fall 2012
    • Interested in a career in rural medicine in Alberta
    • Demonstrating an interest in and dedication to rural medical issues in undergraduate work

  • Applications are now being accepted for the 2012 Tarrant Scholarship. The application deadline is Monday, May 7, 2012.

Honoring the late Dr. Michael Tarrant

  • A family physician from Calgary, with a group practice at the Cambrian Medical Clinic, who was a staff member of the Foothills Hospital and who served with the University of Calgary Department of Family Medicine as residency program director and undergraduate coordinator.

  • Championed rural medical undergraduate education, hoping to establish ongoing rural roots for future physicians.

  • Was an active member of the Alberta Medical Association, Canadian Medical Association and College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC).

  • Was named by the CFPC in 2002 as Family Physician of the Year and awarded the Reg L. Perkin Award.

  • Had special interests in influenza and ran the Viral Watch Program in Alberta for 26 years.
