Director, Negotiations

The Alberta Medical Association is recruiting for the newly created role of Director, Negotiations to join our Health Economics team. Recruitment for this role is being done by the executive search firm Pekarsky & Co.

Position Overview

The Health Economics branch supports physician through compensation strategy and policy development on behalf of Alberta physicians. As the Director, Negotiations, you will support the negotiation process on behalf of physicians and physician groups with government and stakeholders in third party organizations such as Alberta Health Services and the Workers Compensation Board.

In this role you will:

  • Serve as the AMA staff lead to various committees and working groups that will include AHS contract negotiations and may include:
    • Clinical ARPs and other compensations models
    • Fee for Service and fee schedule modernization
    • Academic Medicine and Health services Program contract negotiation
    • WCB and others as required.
  • Assess, prioritize, position and plan negotiation strategies that include buy-in from physicians at each of these key stages.
  • Anticipate and identify risks, and proactively develop risk mitigation strategies.
  • Provide staff support on issues specific to the AMA Agreement, as well as general legal advice on contract and other AMA matters.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a law degree is required. A Bachelor or Master degree in economics, business, or health services administration would be an asset.
  • Minimum of eight years of legal experience directly related to contract negotiations, preferably with health care economics and/or compensation arrangements.
  • Strong knowledge of physician contract models, including experience various Alberta physician compensation and billing arrangements is desired.
  • Superior conflict resolution, facilitation and interpersonal skills as a representative of the organization in significant long-term negotiations with various provincial external stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage relationships. Work collaboratively with external stakeholders, address issues with a measured, calm approach and focus on relationships with working towards the best interests of the AMA.
