PCC Update

This publication from the Physician Compensation Committee is designed to provide regular updates on the approvals, decisions and accomplishments that take place at that table.

Membership change

There has been a recent change in membership to the PCC as we welcome Mr. Bernard Anderson, Executive Director, Workforce Strategy from the Professional Services and Health Benefits division of Alberta Health (AH). Mr. Bernard replaces Mark Brisson from AH.

Update

Since the last PCC Update, the committee continues to make progress as follows:

  • The PCC has received ministerial approval on the allocation for April 1, 2014, and the changes to the Schedule of Medical Benefits (SOMB) are now ready for implementation. Alberta Health (AH) will provide the detailed updates to the SOMB using the normal bulletin communication in the next week.
  • The PCC has approved a 2.5% rate increase to the Physician On-Call Program for each of the two fiscal years 2014-15 and 2015-16, effective April 1, 2014.
  • Planning for Allocation 2015 is underway, following the same process as Allocation 2014. This will result in a 2.5% increase effective April 1, 2015 to the SOMB.
  • The PCC has also developed a document on fee relativity criteria that will be used for individual fee code review. A working group, consisting of AH and Alberta Medical Association (AMA) representatives, has been struck to help examine fee relativity in the province. The criteria will assist the group in its work surrounding fee relativity.

Recent activities

The PCC continues with its work plan and has identified the following areas as priorities:

  • Primary care compensation.
  • Business costs and overhead.
  • Relative value, including an individual fee review.

The PCC is committed to accomplishing its mandate as set out in the AMA Agreement. A strategic requirements document will be finalized soon to add further clarity. We look forward to keeping you informed on our progress through frequently recurring newsletters.
