CMA-AMA Physician Leadership and Professional Development Initiative

Through funding provided by the Canadian Medical Association, the AMA is pleased to offer the Physician Leadership and Professional Development Initiative provided by CMA Joule, a CMA subsidiary. Current and emerging physician leaders will be supported with leadership development that aligns with AMA values of physician wellness, diversity and inclusion, and promotes opportunities for health advocacy and systems transformation.

What you need to know

The PLPD Initiative will consist of multiple leadership and professional development opportunities over a one-year period:

  • Multiple in-house online Physician Leadership Institute (PLI) courses. View learning objectives.
  • Complimentary one-year membership to the Canadian Society of Physician Leaders ($195 value) provided by CSPL for new CSPL members upon completion of one or more PLI courses through this Initiative.
  • Access to coaching opportunities through linkages to recognized Canadian physician coaching organizations for physicians who complete two or more courses through this Initiative.

Eligibility

You are eligible to participate if you are a:

  • Physician/resident physician practicing/residing in Alberta within the past year
  • Medical student studying at an Alberta medical school within the past year

You may submit an Expression of Interest for any number of courses over the year. Priority will be given to those with demonstrate leadership experience or completion of prior PLI (or similar) courses. Ensure to submit your EOI early as courses are expected to fill. EOIs will be considered in the order in which they are received and, should interest exceed program capacity, approved EOIs will be waitlisted. Learn more.

Course offerings and dates

Four PLI courses from the Engaging Others domain have been specifically selected for this Initiative. Each course is held over two sessions of five-to-six learning hours each.

All courses will be held online

  • Maximum of 30 participants for each course
  • At least two spaces in each reserved for students or residents
  • Six spaces reserved for physicians who work or reside outside of the two major metropolitan centers of the province

Courses can be taken without prerequisites and participants are not required to register in a minimum number of courses. As demand is expected to be high, please carefully consider your availability when applying. Attendance at both days of the two-day courses is expected. 

Course fees (approximately $1,400 per course) are covered by the grant. 

Participants may be asked to be photographed or provide reflections of their learning experiences to be included in future AMA or CMA Joule publications, promotions or social media.

Expression of Interest 

You will receive acknowledgment of receipt of your submission within three business days. Please contact physicianleadership@albertadoctors.org if you do not receive confirmation.

You will be notified by email if your EOI is accepted. 

EOIs will be considered in the order in which they are received and if interest exceed program capacity, those that are approved will be placed on a waitlist.
