Calgary physician Dr. Daniel A. Muruve puts his musical talents to work for the community.
His band, The Knockouts, held charity concerts to support health organizations, including Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC), Children's Cottage and the Ride to Conquer Cancer.
We do it because it’s fun and it gives us a good excuse to get together and play for a good cause.

For Dr. Daniel A. Muruve music is more than a creative outlet – it’s a way to give back to the community.
Dr. Muruve, a professor in the University of Calgary’s Department of Medicine and a member of the Snyder Institute in Chronic Diseases, is also an accomplished musician who’s put his passion for music to work raising money for local health organizations.
His band, The Knockouts, came together when Dr. Muruve and Simon Hirota, PhD, Vadim Iablokov (a PhD student) and Mark Seamone (a recent MD graduate) realized they shared a love of music.
“We all worked together and one day picked up instruments and thought it sounded pretty good, so decided to start a band.”
Soon after they came up with the idea of holding charity concerts to support health organizations in the community. Their most recent concert at Calgary’s Lord Nelson’s Bar and Grill raised more than $1,000 for the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada (CCFC).
“We tried not to do it so often that people get bored with it,” notes Dr. Muruve who says the crowd often includes a mix of friends, students and colleagues. “We do it because it’s fun and it gives us a good excuse to get together and play for a good cause.”
In addition to CCFC, the band has also raised funds for Children’s Cottage and the Ride to Conquer Cancer.
Although The Knockouts recently disbanded when one of the members left to do his residency in Nova Scotia, Dr. Muruve is part of another band. Heart Failure Research Unit is an alternative indie rock band that has recorded an album of original music.
The new band allows Dr. Muruve to keep his guitar skills sharp and may even pick up The Knockouts’ fundraising mantle. “The older I get the more important it is to me to give back and this is a great way to do it.”
