AMA and CMA Submission to Department of Finance

Consultation on tax planning using private corporations

October 3, 2017

Dear Member,

Here is a copy of the CMA’s formal submission to Finance Canada’s consultation on proposed taxation changes in both English and French. This submission incorporates input from taxation experts, economists and thousands of physicians to demonstrate how proposed changes will negatively impact Canadians.

In follow up to the CMA submission, yesterday afternoon each provincial and territorial medical association took the opportunity to submit their own letters of support. View the AMA’s letter of support for your information. Our submission has also been shared with our Premier, Minister of Health and Acting Deputy Minister of Health.

In addition, just in case you missed it, please see the following link to an op-ed piece I submitted regarding the proposed tax changes (published in the September 28 edition of the Edmonton Journal): Opinion: Federal Tax Changes will touch health care. As I’m sure you are aware, there has been a lot of media coverage of the federal government’s proposed tax changes, but my intent with this piece was to frame the issue in another way; one that considers the impact on our patients and our health care system as a whole.

While the formal consultation with federal government closed yesterday, there is still work to be done to advocate against these measures. The AMA will continue to work in partnership with the CMA, and all PTMAs, to advocate on behalf of our members.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Yours truly,

Dr. Neil Cooper
AMA President
