Immunization Program Updates and Reminders

October 5, 2017

The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI), Alberta Health (AH) and Alberta Health Services (AHS) continue to recommend annual influenza immunizations for individuals 6 months of age and older. For the 2017-2018 influenza season there are two influenza vaccines available in the provincially funded program:

  • FLUZONE® - injectable, quadrivalent vaccine for Albertans 6 months of age and older; and
  • FLUAD® - adjuvanted, injectable trivalent vaccine for persons 65 years of age and older living in congregate living facilities only. FLUAD® will be available ONLY to AHS Outreach programs (public health) and to Long Term Care partners to immunize residents who are 65 years of age and older. NACI indicates that adjuvanted vaccine should provide increased protection in this older population who are at higher risk of influenza related illness than are community-living seniors. FLUAD® will not be available to community pharmacies, other community health care providers, or to public health at large public clinics.
  • FLUMIST® - This vaccine will not be available as part of the provincially funded influenza immunization program for 2017-2018. NACI has recommended that either injectable vaccine or FLUMIST® can be used for children 2 to 17 years of age. FLUMIST® is no longer considered the preferential vaccine for this age group.
