Update Regarding Resumption of Cancer Screening Services

May 20, 2020

Albertans’ collective efforts of physical distancing, good hygiene practices and staying safe together are helping slow the spread of COVID-19. This has given Alberta Health Services Cancer Screening Programs confidence to begin resuming cancer screening services. A cautious and phased approach will guide the resumption of services.

Alberta Breast Cancer Screening Program

  • All Diagnostic Imaging facilities are resuming services.
  • Community Radiology Clinics will reopen, starting May 19, 2020.
  • Screen Test will resume its services in early June 2020.

Alberta Cervical Cancer Screening Program

  • Patients have been asked to contact their health care provider to discuss when regular Pap Tests should resume.
  • Colposcopy services are reopening province-wide.

Alberta Colorectal Cancer Screening Program

  • Endoscopy services are resuming province-wide. FIT+ colonoscopies will be prioritized based upon wait times for their procedure.
  • FIT testing will resume in Alberta at a later date.

If patients have an urgent concern such as a new symptom or a previous screen requiring immediate follow up, they have been asked to contact their health care provider.
