Appreciating achievement

September 30, 2016

Dr. Padraic E. Carr, AMA President

Dear Member:

In my letter yesterday, I recounted the topics and discussions at the recent Representative Forum and annual general meeting.

I thought you would also be interested to learn about some of the ceremonial moments of the event when we recognized the achievements of some outstanding Albertans.

Here is a copy of a two-page ad appearing in the new issue of Edmonton and Calgary Avenue Magazine. It recognizes 14 Albertans: 10 physicians, three non-physicians and one medical student who were honored at our meeting and also the August meeting of the Canadian Medical Association (CMA) General Council. This was an amazing representation from our wonderful province and I am inclined to agree with the CMA awards master of ceremonies who wondered aloud: “What are they putting in the water at Alberta’s medical schools?”

We are fortunate to be surrounded by such talent and achievement. I hope you will enjoy learning about who has been recognized with these, the highest honors bestowed by the Alberta Medical Association (AMA) and CMA for outstanding contributions to health care.

The program also included the valedictory address of Dr. Carl W. Nohr, who shared those thoughts with you in his final President’s Letter on September 23. We celebrated his term at the annual Evening with the AMA President and the room was packed with well-wishers.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Nohr for his great efforts on behalf of AMA in the past year and his successful efforts to put physician leadership and stewardship on the agenda for the profession and government.

Congratulations also to Dr. Neil D.J. Cooper of Calgary who became president-elect during the meeting. I look forward to working with him. I am well supported with two such colleagues and the board at my side.

Yours truly,

Padraic E. Carr, BMedSc, MD, FRCPC, DABPN
President

P.S. I would be remiss if I did not take this chance to remind you to vote on the tentative Amending Agreement. Please review the material on the AMA website and cast your vote by 4:30 p.m., Thursday, October 13.
