Eligibility

You are eligible for MLR for the months in which you are:

  • A resident of Alberta with an active Alberta home address
  • Licensed and practicing medicine in Alberta and providing eligible services during the calendar year.
  • An Alberta Medical Association (AMA) member in good standing in category:
    • 05 or 15 (Insured Services)
    • 14 (First Year in Practice)
  • A non AMA member who has paid an administrative fee equal to category 05 membership (e.g., to receive the 2017 benefit you must be a 2016-17 member or have paid the administration fee equal to 2016-17 membership).
  • Providing eligible services during the calendar year.

Eligible services include:

  • Insured Services, whether billed on a fee-for-service basis or paid through Alberta Health Services (AHS) or another agency.
  • Clinical services provided through an Alternate Relationship Plan (ARP).
  • Services provided through the Physician On-Call Program.
  • Services provided through AMA Physician Locum Services.
  • Public health services provided through AHS.

If you become ineligible during the year (e.g., you go on leave for part of the year), you should inform the AMA.

You will need to return any reimbursement for the period in which you were ineligible.

Who is not eligible?

Physicians in the membership categories Administrative, Resident, Retired, Under-Graduate, Medical Student and Non-Resident do not qualify for the MLR reimbursement program.

If your status changes during the membership year, you may wish to upgrade your fee category to Insured Services or First Year in Practice to potentially qualify for these benefits.

To be eligible for benefits in the current calendar year, you must upgrade your membership by September 30 of the same year.
