A Year of Advocacy: For Members and Patients

The AMA defended fair compensation, advanced income equity and amplified physician voices. From the Market Rate Review to the launch of the PCPCM, advocacy efforts were bold and strategic. Public campaigns like Acute Care Concerns and PatientsFirst.ca helped spotlight system strain and mobilize support for change.

Supporting Practice and Professional Health

AMA initiatives focused on improving the day-to-day realities of practice. The PCPCM launched with strong uptake, CII/CPAR expanded across Alberta and Learn@AMA grew as a key resource. The AMA became the first provincial or territorial medical association in Canada to create a Section of Indigenous Health - an important step in the AMA's reconciliation journey.

System Leadership and Strategic Partnerships

In response to sweeping health system changes, the AMA realigned its structure and built new alliances. Through the SCA, PCPA and CPHC, physicians helped shape policy and system design. Informatics and AI also took center stage, with AMA advancing ethical frameworks and practical tools for innovation.

Top 5 Highlights of 2024-25

  1. Launch of the Primary Care Physician Compensation Model (PCPCM)

    • Went live April 1, 2025.
    • 1,027 physicians enrolled by September 2, representing ~49% of eligible physicians at time of launch.
    • Designed to support longitudinal care and improve income equity.
    • Estimated 25% income increase for full-time family physicians.

  2. Successful Resolution of Cancer Care Compensation

    • Four-year agreement secured after 18 months of advocacy and arbitration.
    • 11% increase in year one, 20.1% compounded over the term.
    • Strengthens Alberta's ability to recruit and retain cancer care specialists.

  3. Income Equity Initiative Gains Momentum

    • Work continued to improve the Income Equity Measure.
    • Measure helped to inform AMA priorities, like PCPCM.
    • Strong support from section presidents for IEI and the Board's proposed approach.

  4. Acute Care Stabilization Proposal and Campaign

    • Elevated urgent concerns in oncology, surgery, internal medicine, OB/GYN and pediatrics.
    • Garnered widespread media coverage and public engagement.
    • Provided government with a physician-led roadmap for stabilizing acute care.

  5. AMA Organization Restructuring for System Alignment

    • New medical director roles aligned with health system pillars.
    • Geographic governance specialists introduced across corridors.
    • Innovation & Insights Hub launched to support evidence-based decision-making.
