Today, the Government of Alberta announced what it is characterizing as a historic investment in physician funding. While the AMA was not notified in advance of this announcement and must review the government’s figures to understand how they have been calculated, allocated or linked to physician compensation and services, we are encouraged by the government’s focus on the investment required to sustain the system.
The AMA was pleased to hear the Premier and Minister reference upcoming negotiations with the Association and describe a common understanding of the importance of a constructive relationship. We take government at its word, and the AMA looks forward to negotiating in good faith to achieve a fair, sustainable agreement that supports physicians, their practices and the patients they care for. We are hopeful that given our shared interests, the parties will be able to reach a timely agreement once negotiations commence.
As we review the details, the AMA will be looking closely to see whether this funding includes meaningful investments to address the systemic pressures facing Alberta’s health system, including an aging population, increasing patient complexity and continued population growth. We will also be looking to ensure that the funding adequately reflects the rising costs physicians face in operating their practices, as most Alberta physicians are small business owners who must cover staff salaries, rent, utilities, equipment, insurance and other overhead expenses (all of which are susceptible to inflationary pressure) before paying themselves.
The AMA will review the details of the government’s announcement carefully and will communicate directly with members once that review is complete.
