We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of a baby born prematurely due to congenital measles. While we cannot speak to the specific circumstances, we know the family is heartbroken. We extend our heartfelt condolences and support to them during this unimaginable time. We also recognize the health care team who cared for this child with compassion and dedication—our thoughts are with them as well.
This tragic loss is a stark reminder that the ongoing measles outbreak in Alberta was preventable. While some individuals cannot receive the measles vaccine due to medical reasons, this is not the norm. Alberta’s vaccination rates remain too low, and as a result, this outbreak—which should never have begun—continues longer than it should.
Measles is a serious and highly contagious disease. It poses the greatest risk to pregnant people and children under five. If you were born after 1970 and have not received two doses of the measles vaccine, or if you are thinking of getting pregnant, we urge you to get vaccinated. By doing so, you help protect not only yourself but also those around you who are most vulnerable.
We understand that misinformation and disinformation are contributing to vaccine hesitancy, and that many people are being actively targeted with false claims. If you have questions or concerns, please speak with your physician or health care provider, or call 811 HealthLink. Get the facts. Protect yourself. Help us prevent further illness and tragedy.
