We Are the AMA! Inaugural President’s Address

It is the privilege of a lifetime to serve as AMA president this coming year. I’ve been a part of the AMA for over 20 years, and I continue to believe deeply in our association’s principles and mission.

Dear Members,

I want to take this opportunity to extend my heartfelt thanks to Dr. Shelley Duggan for her outstanding leadership and dedicated service as AMA President this past year. Her work has paved the way for meaningful progress, and I’m grateful to carry that momentum forward.

The current health care landscape in Alberta is more uncertain and in flux than it has been in recent memory. Government reforms have brought disruption and uncertainty at a time when patients and providers alike are calling for clarity and stability. The old system definitely needed fixes, but instead of repairing what was broken, we’ve seen increased fragmentation. The question on everyone’s mind is: What is the plan?

We know the answer lies in collaboration. A truly functional health care system must be integrated – where every member of the care team works to their full scope, with a shared understanding of their role in the patient’s journey. And we, as physicians, know where the gaps are. We live them every day. That’s why the AMA must continue to lead with evidence, compassion and vision. When it comes to health care reform, we are the leaders and the voices of our patients.

There are many challenges to face in this coming year, but I am confident we are more than ready to tackle whatever comes our way. We may have different perspectives and, at times, we may even disagree, but I believe in our collective power as a profession. I am committed to listening – to the quiet voices, the frustrated voices, the tired voices and the hopeful ones. I'm here to find common ground, to build consensus and to advocate fiercely for Alberta’s physicians and the patients we serve at every opportunity and table available to me.

Together, we are the AMA!

Kindest regards,

Brian Wirzba, MD, FRCPC
President, Alberta Medical Association

P.S. Members are reminded to register for the 120th Annual General Meeting of the AMA (member login required), taking place Tuesday, October 7 at 6:30 p.m. via Zoom

This virtual AGM is an opportunity for us to come together, reflect on the past year and engage in meaningful dialogue about the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

I also encourage you to explore the 2024–25 AMA Annual Report, which highlights how Alberta’s physicians—and the AMA—have led through transformative change. From bold advocacy to system-wide innovation, this year’s report tells a powerful story of resilience, leadership and progress.

I look forward to connecting with you on October 7.
