May 14, 2026
Alberta’s 2026 wildfire season has begun, with some regions already issuing evacuation alerts. Officials are urging residents to stay prepared.
With that in mind, the AMA has gathered some information for members about various insurance options and encourages you to consider your situation and your risk so you can ensure you have sufficient coverage. In previous fire seasons, government has indicated they will not compensate physicians whose practices were displaced due to wildfire evacuations and instead directs physicians to utilize personal commercial insurance. While we hope it won’t be necessary this season, we wanted to provide the information now so you can apply for any new or additional insurance coverage you may need.
As the wildfire season intensifies, the AMA will use our social media platforms and website to share important information. Members can also contact us at [email protected].
We encourage everyone to watch for updates and to visit the AHS Wildfire Resources page for more information.
Business Interruption Coverage
Westland MyGroup
Clinic owners may want to consider obtaining medical office insurance through Westland MyGroup, which includes loss of business income. Those who have existing coverage are advised to contact Westland to verify coverage levels and ensure clinic information is up to date. Westland’s commercial office insurance includes business interruption coverage for those displaced due to a natural disaster for 30 days and 12 months, depending on selected coverage levels. To ensure all physicians in your clinic are covered, please ensure your policy names each physician and that the declared gross annual revenue reported reflects the billings of all physicians.
To obtain a quote or review your coverage, please call 1-844-999-7687 or visit Alberta Medical Association - Westland MyGroup.

Home insurance
TD Insurance

Our partner, TD Insurance, is committed to supporting AMA members and believes that preparation is the key to protecting what matters most to you and building resilient communities. That is why they are working with FireSmart™ Canada, a national public program run by the Canadian Interagency Forest Fire Center.
FireSmart™ Canada aims to educate homeowners and communities on how to reduce wildfire risks through self-applied resiliency measures. Embers originating from wildfires have the potential to be carried kilometres away by wind. FireSmart principles seek to mitigate this risk by helping to ensure that landing embers are deprived of combustible materials.
It is important to stay prepared this wildfire season, and TD Insurance encourages homeowners in Alberta to take proactive measures to safeguard their properties.
Below, you will find Ten FireSmart™ Canada Principles to Keep Your Home Safe:
- Do a self-assessment using the FireSmart Begins at Home app.
- Keep a 1.5m non-combustible zone around your house, free of vegetation, etc.
- Clean gutters and roofs, keep decks and balconies clear of leaves and debris.
- Mow the lawn (no more than 10cm in length).
- Plant wildfire-resistant vegetation.
- Install 3mm vent screens, specifically designed to prevent the entry of embers.
- Prune and space trees to create a 2m clearance from the ground and 3m apart.
- Keep firewood at least 10m away from your home.
- Do the same for your shed, garage, and other structures on your property.
- Have a wildfire evacuation plan.
Conduct a self-assessment of your home's wildfire resiliency via the FireSmart Begins at Home app or visit https://firesmartcanada.ca/.
