Showcasing Alberta’s Innovation on the International Stage: AMA-ACTT at IHI 2025

The Alberta Medical Association’s Accelerating Change Transformation Team (ACTT) will be presenting two major initiatives at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) Forum in Anaheim this December, the premier international conference for health care quality improvement for the last 30 years.

This is an exciting opportunity to celebrate the work happening across Alberta and to highlight the contributions of physicians, clinic teams and our ACTT team, who all play an essential role in supporting health system transformation, championing practice enhancements and strengthening patient care.

At IHI, we’ll be sharing Alberta’s story of primary care compensation reform and access improvement, showcasing how evidence-based change management, physician co-design and data-driven insights are shaping a more sustainable and equitable system.

PCPCM: Transforming Primary Care Compensation

ACTT is leading a 90-minute interactive session, sharing Alberta’s implementation of the Primary Care Physician Compensation Model (PCPCM), a major milestone in system reform and financial stability for physicians.

Through physician leadership and co-design, ADKAR-based change management and data-informed tools like the PCPCM Financial Calculator, Alberta saw 40% of eligible physicians apply within the first month, demonstrating strong buy-in across the province.

This work reflects years of collaboration: from CPAR-enabled data insights to physician-led learning sessions that helped peers consider the new model benefits and prepare clinics for implementation.

Improving Access Across Alberta

Our It’s Not Magic, It’s the Diffusion of Innovations poster highlights how ACTT supported clinics to enhance access through tailored tools, training and mass-customized approaches. By designing supports for different adopter groups, from innovators to the early majority, we built momentum and created pathways for clinics to approach new strategies through small, manageable changes.

The result: more than 247 learners enroled in Access Training between January and September, with strong early engagement from change agents and sustained interest across the province.

A Celebration of Alberta’s Leadership

Representing Alberta on the international stage is an extraordinary honour made possible by the physicians and clinic teams who engage with ACTT programs, test improvements, co-design solutions and share candid insights that help us create high-impact tools.

To Alberta’s physicians and teams: thank you for your engagement and your ongoing work to strengthen care for patients across the province. We are proud to showcase Alberta at IHI and represent the collective effort behind this work.
