Physicians needed to lead health system stewardship

A sustainable health system depends on high-value care shaped by the people who understand it best: physicians.

Dear Members,

A sustainable health system depends on high-value care shaped by the people who understand it best: physicians. As clinicians, we don’t just work within the health system — we anchor it. Albertans consistently tell us they trust physicians to put patients first and to speak honestly about what the system needs. One of the strongest ways to reinforce that trust is by demonstrating that we, as a profession, are committed to being careful, responsible stewards of the health care dollars entrusted to us.

That’s why I’m inviting members to participate in the AMA’s resource stewardship initiative through two new AMA committees. These committees will bring together physicians — system experts and respected leaders — to examine anonymized practice patterns and identify opportunities to enhance value and support clinical choices that improve care while safeguarding the sustainability of Alberta’s health care system.

  • Quality Stewardship Committee: Provide evidence-informed recommendations that advance clinical best practices, shape policy and elevate patient care. This committee reports to the AMA Physician Workforce & Stewardship branch. Learn more and apply.
  • Peer Review Billing Committee: Support resource stewardship and identify and promote billing best practices. Collaborate with colleagues and sections to share knowledge, support billing consistency across the profession and provide recommendations to improve the SOMB. This committee reports to the AMA Board. Learn more and apply.

AMA’s approach to resource stewardship
This work is not part of government’s formal compliance processes. These committees operate independently from government’s Compliance Branch and the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta, with a focus on supporting physicians and patients — not policing them. Their purpose is to foster a positive, collegial environment where peers help peers strengthen practice, enhance value and contribute to a more sustainable system. Confidentiality will remain paramount. Physician identifiers will never be visible to committee members or AMA staff.

Submit an expression of interest
Physicians have deep insight into what drives quality and value in care, and Albertans trust us to lead. By participating in this work, you can help shape how our system evolves and ensure clinical expertise remains at the center of decisions about resource use.

I encourage you to learn more about the AMA’s resource stewardship initiative and submit an expression of interest to join one (or both) of these committees.
