Dual Practice Task Force

The AMA established the Dual Practice Task Force in January 2026 to bring a physician perspective to the development of Alberta’s proposed dual practice model.

The Task Force is composed of physicians with a broad range of clinical, leadership and health-system experience. Members represented different specialties, practice settings and regions of Alberta, including urban and rural care, community and hospital-based practice, and publicly funded and independent clinical environments.

The Task Force considered the potential implications of dual practice across seven key areas:

  1. Policy, governance and oversight
  2. Legal, ethical and professional standards
  3. Health workforce sustainability and equity
  4. Quality and patient safety
  5. Social supports and equity impacts
  6. Health data integration and transparency
  7. Financial integrity and cost effectiveness

In April 2026, AMA’s task force submitted 70 proposed safeguards to the Government of Alberta to inform the development and implementation of any dual practice model to ensure that any model is clearly regulated, transparent, accountable and guided by the public interest.
