A distinguished career
Dr. Gomes earned his MD in 1988 and completed his general surgery residency at the University of Alberta and interventional endoscopy fellowship at the Royal Alexandra Hospital. To this day, Dr. Gomes is a permanent staff member in the general surgery division at the Chinook Regional Hospital. He has served as Surgery Site Chief, Chief of the Department of Surgery, Medical Director of the Chinook Breast Health Program and Medical Lead of the Colorectal Cancer Screening Program. In his academic work, Dr. Gomes has been a clinical professor and site coordinator for the Universities of Alberta and Calgary, held positions on the Royal College examination board, the Canadian Association of General Surgeons Endoscopy Taskforce and is a two-time recipient of the rural Family Medicine Preceptor of the Year Award.
The AMA is the living interface between physicians and patients, advocating for ever-improved medical care and better lives for Albertans. It is also our interface with government and the health system at large.
An active AMA member
Dr. Gomes has served on the Section of General Surgery as President, Past President and as a part of the TOP guidelines working group for colorectal screening in 2023 and post-polypectomy guidelines in 2016 and 2021.
Benefits of working with the AMA
Working together as physicians allows us to appreciate our diversity while supporting equity and appropriate resources of health care. Few surgical specialists run for the board and believe our voice is also valuable. I look forward to learning the intricacies of shepherding such a large group of physicians with diverse viewpoints.
Favorite AMA memory
Great dance parties when new presidents are installed- it's been a great way to get to know the staff!
On a personal note
I have two 'adult' children, a wonderful partner, and a faithful golden retriever. I enjoy backcountry and downhill skiing, cycling and running. I now have time for woodworking and other pastimes.
