Margaret Hutton History of Medicine and Health Care Student Research Scholarship

The Margaret Hutton History of Medicine and Health Care Student Research Scholarship exists to encourage original research by undergraduate medical trainees, post-graduate medical trainees, undergraduate and graduate students in the history of medicine and health care.

The objective of the Margaret Hutton History of Medicine and Health Care Student Research Scholarship is to encourage original research by undergraduate medical trainees, post-graduate medical trainees, undergraduate and graduate students in the history of medicine and health care.

Eligibility

This research scholarship is open to any applicant registered in undergraduate or graduate medical education programs in Alberta, as well as graduate students in the history of medicine and health care registered in programs in Alberta. Applicants will be undertaking a clearly defined project in the history of medicine and health care under the direction of a faculty member at a post secondary institution in Alberta.

Applications are due May 15 annually

Applicants will be asked to provide (in electronic form):

  1. Proof of current registration in an eligible program as outlined above.
  2. Research proposal (up to two pages in length), outlining the research question and methods.
  3. A brief letter from the applicant’s supervising faculty member (from any post secondary institution in Alberta) indicating their agreement to supervise and mentor the applicant for the project.
  4. Description of the benefits to scholarly understanding of the history of medicine and health care (up to one page in length).
  5. Duration of project and finish date.
  6. Final format of the scholarly activity (e.g., journal article, book chapter, or other).

At the finish date of the project, successful applicants will provide a final report or copy of the manuscript or publication resulting from their research.

Selection Criteria

Two research scholarships will be given annually. Successful applicants will be selected by the History of Medicine Committee, based on the quality and feasibility of the applications. Preference may be given to projects which focus on the history of medicine and health care in Alberta, but all projects will be considered.

Value

Each scholarship is for $2,000 CAD. The final report will be submitted to the History of Medicine Committee no later than 60 days after the finish date of the project. In any publications resulting from the research grant, the financial support of the Alberta Medical Foundation Charitable Fund must be acknowledged.
