National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 2023

September 29, 2023

September 30 is the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In honour of survivors, their families and communities, we hope you join us in reflecting on the history and legacy of residential schools in Canada, and what you can do to achieve mutually respectful relationships between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples. Please note the AMA offices and phone lines will be closed Monday, October 2 in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Regular business hours will resume Tuesday October 3.

Micro-aggression training for physicians launches

A step toward anti-racism and anti-discrimination. Over the past few months, the AMA, the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta and Alberta Health Services have collaborated on a new online training course for Alberta’s physicians on micro-aggressions. The course launched on June 14 and is available to all regulated members through the myCPSA virtual learning platform.

Message re wildfires from AMA

UPDATED MAY 12 - A few cooler days of showers helped to douse some fires and that is good news. Many members and Albertans are still out of their homes or on evacuation alert. As hot weather returns, we’re sending thanks and good thoughts to the firefighters, communities and volunteers who continue to contribute amazingly to the response. To our members, we say again that our thoughts are with you. We’ll keep compiling information here.

The survey will close Friday, May 19 at 4 p.m. The survey is being conducted on behalf of the Representative Forum Governance Oversight Group; it supports GOG's goal to increase the effectiveness of the AMA's governance structure and promote excellence among sections. All responses are anonymous and only aggregate data will be provided to section executives and shared with GOG.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

On September 30, AMA offices will be closed as we commemorate the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The AMA supports the aims of this important day and is hosting an optional one-hour webinar for AMA staff so that they may learn more about the history of the residential school system. For members with questions on billing for this day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a federal statutory holiday but not a provincial statutory holiday in Alberta. Claims for the date of service September 30 will be claimed as a weekday and are not eligible for additional after hours or surcharge payments during the daytime hours e.g., TST, WK, etc.

Influenza Immunization Program Update

This year, community physicians (primary care clinics and family physicians) participating in the influenza immunization program will receive vaccine from the wholesale distributor, Accuristix in collaboration with Alberta Health (AH), and order through the Alberta Vaccine Inventory (AVI) system. This process is similar to the one used for ordering COVID-19. Alberta Health has provided information for interested clinics on how to join and the new requirements for participating. Other community providers, including continuing care centers, OHS and corrections facilities must fill out the Influenza Vaccine Provider Registration Form.
