Administrator replaces AHS Board

Dear Members,

Today the government announced that the Board of Directors of Alberta Health Services has been replaced by an administrator. We thank the AHS board for their service. The AMA has consistently called for stability in the system. I stress the need to consult closely with those who provide the care that Albertans need in our hospitals, acute care and community sites. This is a momentous task given that the largest barrier to improving access is the lack of health human resources.

As the administrator, Dr. John Cowell brings solid experience and understanding to his role. His background with the Health Quality Council of Alberta bodes well for an evidence-based approach to delivering high quality care in a system under severe stress. We wish him well and look forward to working with him.
