CPSA consultation on job action standard is open

September 18, 2020

Dr. Christine Molnar, AMA President

Dear Members:

Many of you will already have noticed that the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta has opened a consultation on their proposed standards for: job action; closing or leaving a medical practice; and relocating a medical practice. These proposals come in response to a June letter from the Minister, calling on the CPSA to take steps “to require physicians to mitigate the impact of withdrawal of services.”

We encourage you to review the college documents and provide your feedback to CPSA.

The AMA is preparing a response as well. There are policy implications which must be considered when physicians - who are already fundamentally limited in their options to respond to government actions - face further limitations of their rights.

On Monday, I will send you an email containing the Reports to the Annual General Meeting and the registration link to our October 5 Virtual AGM. Please watch for this! The reports include a review of the events and actions of the year just passed, and the AGM event will provide opportunity for members to ask questions and share thoughts and opinions. This has been a truly unprecedented year. I hope to see you at the AGM.

In your service,

Christine P. Molnar, MD, FRCPC
President, Alberta Medical Association
