Election issue 5: Indigenous health

April 28, 2023

Dr. Fredrykka Rinaldi, AMA President

Dear Members,

The most recent issue in our Handle with Care election information program explores Indigenous health. By almost every measure, First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples in Alberta experience poorer health outcomes as a result of ongoing health inequities and barriers to care. This is evident in higher rates of chronic illness, mental health challenges and addiction. It’s unacceptable that this reality persists in 2023.

I encourage you to read the issue profile and the accompanying questions for candidates and parties in the upcoming provincial election. We’ll be exploring the complex challenges impacting Indigenous health on our social media platforms in the days and weeks ahead.

You are always welcome to share your thoughts with me. You can email me via president@albertadoctors.org. You can also comment on this letter on the AMA website.

Regards,
