Overview (for IMGs in Alberta)

  • International medical graduates (IMGs) must be deemed eligible by the Alberta International Medical Graduate (AIMG) program in order to participate in the CaRMS match process for designated Alberta IMG positions.
  • AIMG program eligibility criteria are specified on the AIMG program website.
  • CaRMS R-1 summary of intake criteria for IMGs by province.
  • In Alberta, and all provinces other than Quebec, IMGs apply to a separate stream of positions than Canadian graduates in one or more disciplines.
  • Alberta and Quebec are the only two provinces that deem IMGs ineligible to use both previous creditable PG training or graduate with Independent (restricted or unrestricted) licensure.

Information from CaRMS on AIMG

International medical graduates (IMGs) must be deemed eligible by the Alberta AIMG program in order to participate in the CaRMS match process for designated Alberta IMG positions. AIMG program eligibility criteria are specified on the AIMG program website.

The AIMG program determination of eligibility to participate in the match process is valid for the specified match year only. Applicants who are deemed eligible for participation in a specified match year who are not matched must re-apply to and be deemed eligible by the AIMG program in order to be considered for a subsequent match year. Please visit the AIMG program website.

International medical graduates (IMGs) candidates who are matched through the first iteration of CaRMS must successfully complete the AIMG program externship prior to the start of residency. Only those candidates who successfully complete the externship will be eligible to begin the residency program to which they matched. Please see the AIMG program website for details about the externship.”
