RF supports next steps for Income Equity Initiative

September 28, 2023

Dr. Fredykka Rinaldi, AMA President

Dear Members,

The Fall Representative Forum marked a major milestone in terms of the AMA’s Income Equity Initiative. Delegates expressed strong support for IEI and use of the Income Equity Measure to guide AMA decision making. The following motion was passed:

THAT the RF approves for ratification the use of the Income Equity Measure to inform policy development.

In terms of next steps, a dispute resolution process will be developed to allow economic sections to bring forward any errors or omissions they may have with respect to the studies or measure. When that process is complete, then the initiative will be brought to membership for a ratification vote in 2024.

We will keep you updated as things progress. In the meantime, if you’d like further information about the initiative please visit the IEI section of the AMA website (member login required).

You are always welcome to share your thoughts with me. You can email me via president@albertadoctors.org. You can also comment on this letter on the AMA website.

Regards,

fred Rinaldi, MD, CCFP, FCFP, LLB, MBA, MPA(HSA), BCom

This initiative will do nothing, but further fracture the membership into different sections of physicians. Then it would be silly to lobby any political group without an defined and clear message as you would by playing into the hands of politicians that will do nothing more than further divide the membership. Unless 100% approval of this initiative is carried out you are continuing a fools errand that will do nothing to improve the quality of care. The other most serious issue will be that you have no way to redistribute income if the FFS model is in place across the entire section of physicians. Once you have FFS and multiple private and public entities involved the administration of such an initiative is flawed.
