Medical student testimonies - TD Insurance Meloche Monnex/AMA Medical Student Bursary

April 26, 2022

The TD Insurance Meloche Monnex/AMA Medical Student Bursary helps to reduce financial pressure from escalating medical school tuition fees. The boost this bursary provides helps qualified students afford to attend medical school. Since 2001, the program has awarded $2,061,000.

This year we were fortunate to administer bursaries to 70 well-deserving medical students. Four of this year's recipients, University of Calgary medical students Bree Kullman and Tina Nash as well as University of Alberta medical students Marc Beaudin and Aaron Chung, want to express their gratitude.

Thank you for your financial support via the Medical Student Bursary. You have my profound gratitude, as I am cognizant that it comes at a particular time in the pandemic where students experience more pronounced financial hardship and donors have less funds to give. For me, this bursary is an important step in bringing myself out of student debt as I begin the next stage of my medical professional life as a resident, and I appreciate your support along the journey!

I am grateful to all of the donors who made the AMA Medical Student Bursary possible. As a student of lower socioeconomic status, this award helps me greatly in offsetting the expenses of medical school, offsetting the increased costs of living and reaching my full potential as a student physician.

I’m a mature student coming to medicine from a career as a wilderness guide. The transition has been a major one: exciting, challenging and financially risky! This bursary helps to ease the financial load of a medical education, and also signaled to me the support that exists within the medical community for new trainees. Thank you for both the financial bursary and the boost in morale!

I am grateful for the support of physicians who have gracious donated to help me achieve my goals in medicine. Your support is more than just a monetary gift; it is a reflection of your commitment to my learning and future practice and belief in my success, and so I honour that by working hard in my studies, staying focused and dedicated to the journey. Thank you for your care and award support and I am grateful to being part of such a wonderful professional family.

The TD Insurance Meloche Monnex/AMA Medical Student Bursary program is made possible through a significant contribution by TD Insurance Meloche Monnex as well as donations from generous physician members. Bursaries are $1,500 each and in March 2022, $105,000 was awarded to medical students who qualified.
