Business Costs Program (BCP)

The Business Costs Program (BCP) supports “practices where increased business costs are having an impact on stability and attractiveness, including family practice and other groups in like circumstances” (2006 Amending Agreement).

The BCP:

  • Is available across the province. All physicians who provide visit services in an office-based setting are eligible to receive payments through a fee modifier of $2.92, (1.1% increase effective April 1, 2016), on select office visit and consultation codes.
  • Requires no application. The health service code and facility number on the claim determine eligibility. The fee modifier will be added on automatically when the program is implemented.
  • BCP payments will be limited and the rates will be equalized across the province (effective April 1, 2017)
    • BCP payments will pay a maximum of 50 payments per day per physician regardless of how many eligible claims are submitted from any location in a given day.
    • BCP payments will be equalized so that there is one rate payable for the entire province. The previous rate for Airdrie, DeWinton and Calgary ($3.45) will be reduced to the lower rate ($2.92).
  • Has a varying impact. The program will have a greater impact on family physicians and specialists in office-based practices.

The Alberta Medical Association stands as an advocate for its physician members, providing leadership & support for their role in the provision of quality health care.
