Physicians in rural areas

In this section, find out about locum programs for family physicians and specialists in rural areas and how to request a locum physician through the Alberta Medical Association's Physician Locum Services®.

What services can I access?

Services for family physicians in rural areas:

  • Office and emergency-room coverage for rural physicians practicing and living in communities with fewer than five physicians.
  • Weekend coverage for any physician in a community with fewer than four physicians.
  • Weekend coverage for senior physicians who have practiced more than nine years in rural Alberta and are older than 54 (in communities with fewer than 16 physicians).

Summer months may be limited to a maximum of two weeks locum coverage per requesting physician to accommodate the high demand for the service.

Communities with critical shortages are assisted with locum coverage based on locum availability.

Specialists practicing in Alberta regional centers outside Calgary and Edmonton can access:

  • Specialist locum coverage.
  • Locum coverage for weekends and for periods away from practice for up to four weeks.

How do I find a locum physician?

There are two ways you can apply for a locum physician.

  1. Use the PLS Job Board to find a locum or post your availability for a locum position
  2. Or contact
