Dr. Padraic E. Carr

Dr. Padraic E. Carr, a psychiatrist based in Edmonton, is the Alberta Medical Association's (AMA's) 2016-17 President. He assumed office during the AMA Fall Representative Forum, September 24 in Calgary. He is the AMA Immediate Past-President.
A distinguished career
Dr. Carr received his medical degree from the University of Alberta (U of A) in 1990. Since 1995, he has been practicing at the Grey Nuns Community Hospital where he previously served as facility chief in the Department of Psychiatry and as president of the medical staff. Dr. Carr was also consultant psychiatrist at Stanton Regional Health Board in Yellowknife, NWT.
For almost two decades Dr. Carr has mentored and instructed medical students and residents, and has given over 120 invited lectures. Internationally, in 2004 he was recognized as a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
An active AMA member
Dr. Carr began his service with the Alberta Medical Association in 1992 as the resident representative on the Committee on Constitution and Bylaws. He has served in a range of roles since then, including:
- President of the Section of General Psychiatry
- Member of the Nominating Committee
- Representative Forum delegate since 2003
- Member of the Board of Directors since 2006
- AMA delegate on many occasions at the Canadian Medical Association General Council
As well, Dr. Carr sits on the Executive Committee and the Joint AMA/CPSA Executive Committee.
